Morse graduated from Clermont High School in 1955.

Their oldest son, Gary was born in Olympia, WA. After Leonard was discharged from the service, they returned to Iowa and began farming north of Postville and later near the junction south of Castalia. In 1961 they bought the Damond Meyer farm south of Castalia in Bloomfield Twp. where they farmed while their children were growing up. When their son, Dan, was married, Leonard and Jean built a new home on an acreage near their farm where they now live. Dan and his family live on the farm.

Leonard and Jean Schutte are active members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Leonard has served on the church council and as a Bloomfield Twp. trustee. He was a member of the Castalia Fire Department for over 20 years. Jean has been a member of Rosemaling Club. She is a talented rosemaler and basket weaver, and has taught many classes in the art of basket weaving. She was a 4-H leader for many years, and has served as judge for the 4-H exhibits at county fairs. Leonard and Jean are members of the Winneshiek Co. Farm Bureau.

They are the parents of two sons and a daughter: Gary married Sandra Reeg. They are divorced. Gary farms where his grandparents, Helmuth and Amanda Schutte, lived. He has three children: Bryan; Aaron; and Alayna. Karen married Kim Lenth on 26 Oct 1985. She is a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) at the West Union Hospital. They live on, and farm, the Lenth farm near Luana, IA. They are the parents of three children: Breanna; Cody and Wade. Dan married Vicki Howe on 19 Aug 1989. Dan is farming on his parents farm. He also operates an auto body shop, and paints and repairs cars. Vicki is a Registered Nurse at Prairie du Chien, Wl Hospital. They are the parents of two children: Brent and Sara.

Schutte, Ruben and Marjorie (Ralston)

Ruben Carl Schutte was born on 7 Jun 1920 at the family farm in Clayton Co. near Luana, IA. His parents were Charles Frederick William Schutte (b. 11 Apr 1879) and Ida Anna Sander (b. 12 Apr 1880). They were married on 27 Feb 1906. They had six children: Ethel, Arthur, Harry, Charles, Robert and Ruben. Ida died 8 Mar 1927. Charles married Ida Lina Auguste Schultz (b. 7 Dec 1887) on 8 Mar 1928. They had one child, Doris.

Ruben married Marjorie Fern Ralston on 17 Jan 1947 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Luana. Marjorie was born 9 Feb 1922 in Allamakee Co. Marjorie's parents were Earl John Ralston (b. 19 Nov 1893) and Phoena Ann Evans (b. 23 Apr 1895). They were married 12 Jan 1916. Earl and Phoena had nine children: Beulah, Helen, Gerald, Marjorie, Roberta, Dale, Curtis, Lucille and Leon.

Ruben and Marjorie had five children: Linda, Kathryn, Dean, Charles and Marsha. Linda June (b.  at Prairie du Chien, Wl) married Merlin Dean Crain  on 28 Jul 1965 at West Union, IA. They had four children: Janetta, Sandra, Michael and Michelle. They also have four grandchildren: Tiffany, Nicholas, Jonathan and Ryan. Kathrvn Ann (b.at Waukon, IA) married Lyle Orville Tollefson on 30 Nov 1968 in Castalia, IA. They had three children: Jeremy, Brenda and Valerie. They have one grandchildren, Desiree. Dean Ruben (b. at Decorah, IA) married Janet Ann Tollefson on 7 Sep 1968 at Decorah. They had one child, Tammy. They were divorced. There are three grandchildren: Lynsey, Bret and Tori. Dean had a common-law wife, Diana Lynn Crain. They had one child, Dean. They were divorced. Dean married Jeanne Marie Lensing on 25 Jul 1981 in Festina, IA. They had five children: twins James and Joshua, Jennifer, Jacob and Jonathan. Charles John (b. at Decorah) married Judy Caroline Bush on 25 Oct 1969 at Castalia. They had two children: Matthew and Heather. They were divorced. Charles married Rosemarie Gebel on 22 Mar 1977 in Postville, IA. They later divorced. There were no children by Charles’ second marriage. Marsha Kav (b. in Postville) married Roger Michael Phillips on 25 Jun 1976 in Decorah. They had four children: Nicholle, Travis, Lance and Shalene. They have one grandchild, Laen.

Ruben and Marjorie farmed all their married life. They started out just north of Ossian, then moved south of Ossian, later farmed southwest of Castalia and the last years farmed northeast of Ossian. Ruben was finally forced to quit farming after an accident while milking cows shattered the upper part of his leg. It was then that a tumor was found that was cancerous. They gave up farming and moved to Decorah. Ruben passed away on 4 May 1992 and was buried at Pleasant View Cemetery north of Castalia. Marjorie is living in Decorah at Heritage Haven and enjoys walking and visiting with all the new friends she has made.
